Argentina & Iran Escape Day 1 Of U21 World Championships With Sweeps

2017 MEN’S U21 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Day one of the Men’s U21 World Championships has come to a close for Pool C, with Argentina and Iran coming out with three-set sweeps. The wins came with a spread out offense for all teams, with multiple players contributing to the wins, as well as a number of errors riddling the losers of the matches deterring their chances at a victory.

Argentina def. Ukraine

  • 3-0, (25-21, 25-16, 25-20)

Argentina outplayed the Ukraine in their first match of the World Championships. The first set was a tight battle until the Argentinian team took control late to take the lead and the set, while the second set was a breeze for Argentina, winning the set by nine points. The final set of the match was much like the first, but the Ukraine couldn’t maintain, dropping the third set and the match.

Leading Argentina was Jan Martinez Fanchi with 14 points in the match, nearly twice as much as the closest scorer on the team.

For the Ukraine, Oleh Piotnyrtkyi led the squad with nine points.

Iran def. Italy

  • 3-0, (25-22, 25-19, 25-21)

Despite a clear attacking advantage for the Italian squad, they were unable to handle the Iranian block and their own mistakes. Italy out-hit Iran 40-31 but Iran out-blocked Italy 11-6. The Iranian side also took advantage of 31 Italian errors in the match, that riddled them to defeat.

Iran was led by Rasoul Aghchehli who put down 11 points in the win with nine being off attacks and two blocks. Both Esmaeil Mosaferdashliboroun and Amirhossein Esfandiar contributed another nine points for the Iranians.

For Italy, Giulio Pinali was the match-best in points with 12 while Paolo Zonca added another 10 points in the loss.

Up Next

Iran will take on the Ukraine to keep their winning ways alive, while Argentina will look to continue in the same path against Italy.
