5-Time U.S. Olympian Dani Scott Severely Injured in Stabbing
Former U.S. National Team volleyball player Danielle Scott-Arruda is in critical condition after being stabbed by her sister’s estranged husband on Sunday evening in Baton Rouge. The 46-year old was one of 3 victims of the attack, in which her sister Stefanie Vallery was killed and her niece (who shares her name Danielle Scott) was also injured.
According to The Advocate, Michael Vallery fled after fatally stabbing his wife Stefanie Vallery around 8PM on Sunday. According to their daughter, the two were in the process of getting a divorce.
Vallery was pronounced dead at the seen, while the younger Dani Scott said that her aunt is ‘scheduled for surgery, but expected to recover.’
The 46-year old Scott-Arruda was a member of the US Olympic women’s volleyball team at the 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2012 Olympic Games, which broke the record for Olympic appearance by a U.S. female volleyball player. She carried the U.S. flag at the opening ceremony of the 2007 Pan American Games.
In 1993, Scott-Aruda was named the Honda Sports Award winner as the top collegiate volleyball player and led Long Beach State to the NCAA National Championship. She was also named the MVP, best blocker, and best scorer at the 2001 FIVB World Grand Prix, and holds Olympic silver medals from both the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games.
GoFundMe Account Set Up
Tayyiba Haneef-Park, who was Scott’s teammate on 3 US Olympic Teams, has set up a GoFundMe account to benefit Danielle Scott (the elder).
“Danielle, a five-time USA Volleyball Olympian, is a selfless and inspirational woman,” Haneef-Park said. “In her attempt to protect her sister from attack, she was critically wounded in the thigh and hands. She underwent surgery and will have a long road to full recovery ahead of her. On behalf of the family, I am reaching out for support, with your help, to establish relief for both Stefanie’s family and Danielle. Any contributions will help funeral costs for Stefanie as well as provide medical assistance for Danielle as she recovers from this tragic incident.”
Lauren Della of Panther Creek High School in Cary, North Carolina has verbally committed to play collegiate beach volleyball at Stetson University in Florida.
The had a banner year in 2018 – she qualified for 4 different volleyball national championships and helped her high school indoor team to the North Carolina 4A (big school) state championship game for the first time in school history.
Della’s 2018 National volleyball bids:
USAV – U16 Open – Indoor
USAV – U16 Open – Beach
USAV – U18 Open – Beach
AAU – Jr. Olympics – Beach
She was named the MVP of her high school team, Academic All-Conference, and a member of t he All-Conference team. Playing for Triangle Volleyball, she’s been on the club’s top performance squad since she was 12.
Della has been both a beach and indoor player since she was 10. She said that while she loves both sides of the game, she decided to focus on beach in college.
Indoors, the 5’11” junior has 821 kills and 702 digs in 235 sets played through 3 seasons. She’s led the Tri-6 conference in kills in each of the last 2 years.
Her older sister Caitlyn is a 6’3″ middle blocker at Wake Forest who has 90 total blocks this season indoors.
Stetson qualified for the first-ever NCAA Beach Volleyball National Championship Tournament in 2016, but has missed the last 2. This is a key domestic pickup for a team that’s looking to build on early-program success in the sport. 8 of the team’s 14 listed players for 2019 are internationals.
The Stanford Cardinal continued to chip away at BYU’s lead as the #1 team in the AVCA coaches’ poll in week 12. Stanford, who are ranked #1 by the computers in the RPI rankings, peeled 4 votes away from BYU in the latest ranking. While the undefeated Cougars are still the top team in the vast majority of coaches’ brackets, they are slightly-more controversial. Every voting coach in the poll except 1 had Stanford ranked #1 or #2 (the only exception is Morgan State head coach Ramona Riley-Bozier, who had Stanford ranked #3).
4 coaches, meanwhile, pegged BYU as #3 – Matt Ulmer from Oregon (in the same conference as Stanford); Sam Crosson from Cal Poly; Liz Hart from Northern Kentucky; and Shawn Garus from Boise State.
Every one of those coaches had Minnesota at #2. Of that group, only Ulmer’s team has played any of those top 3. Ulmer’s Ducks lost 3-1 to Stanford twice, but beat Minnesota 3-1 – and he elevated the Gophers over BYU in his poll.
(Only 2 Pac-12 head coaches and only 1 WCC head coach have voted in this year’s coaches’ poll).
The top 12 in this year’s poll all remained the same, with the first change coming when Florida jumped USC for 13th, with neither the coaches nor the computers penalizing the Trojans much for their 3-1 loss to #20 Washington (though Washington was rewarded by the coaches, jumping 5 spots from 25 to 20).

Next Poll: November 19
The BYU Cougars, who remain #1 in both the VolleyMob and AVCA Coaches’ polls, continue to slide down the AVCA rankings. The Cougars, now 25-0 on the season, swept the West Coast Conference’s two worst teams, 8-19 San Francisco and 6-22 Santa Clara, last week. They’ve still only lost 2 sets in 15 conference matches so far (both to San Diego), but thanks to losses to #s 179 and 217 in the RPI rankings, the computers punished them for the 2nd-straight week.
BYU clinched at least a share of the WCC title (though they will, realistically, win it outright).
That was the only real movement in the top 5, as only one team in the RPI top 10, USC, lost last week, though they were only penalized one spot as the computers continue to adore the 19-8 Trojans.
Other Major Movements:
The Baylor Bears jumped 4 spots from 19 to 15 after a 3-1 win over Iowa State and a 3-0 sweep of Kansas State last weekend. The wins leave the Bears a half-game ahead of Kansas for 2nd place in the Big 12, with the Bears having a chance at home against Texas on Friday to clinch a seed in the NCAA tournament.
Michigan slid 7 spots to #20 after losing 3-0 to Maryland and 3-1 to Nebraska, the latter of which was in front of a sold-out crowd of 1,800 at the Cliff Kean Arena in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines are still safely into the NCAA tournament, but they don’t have many matches left to claw their way back into the seeds – #17 Penn State is pretty much the only opponent left who can appreciably help the Wolverines’ lot.
Rice was undefeated in Conference USA play heading into last week, before losing to both FIU and Florida Atlantic. That probably eliminates any chance of the conference getting 2 bids to the NCAA tournament (Conference USA has a tournament to decide its champion) – Rice dropped 6 spots from 31 to 37. While a 37 RPI team has a chance at an at-large invite, if the Owls lose again, they might drop further and out of consideration.
Yale jumped 15 spots in the RPI from 61 to 46 after sweeping Columbia on Saturday to clinch the outright Ivy League title. That ensures them of a spot in the NCAA National Championship tournament.
UNC Asheville finished their season at 15-11 with wins over USC Upstate and Radford. That moved them up 38 spots in the RPI from 231 to 193 – the biggest jump in the ranking.
The RPI system, used in basketball, baseball, softball, hockey, soccer, lacrosse, and volleyball, is designed to help committees select teams for the 64-team NCAA tournament as well as the seeding of those teams once they get there.
The index comprises a team’s winning percentage (25%), its opponents’ winning percentage (50%), and the winning percentage of those opponents’ opponents (25%).
As compared to the VolleyMob Power Rankings and the AVCA poll, the RPIrankings are calculated mathematically. The intent is to create a more objective ranking to juxtapose the subjectivity of the AVCA poll, though by their nature there is still some subjectivity as to which numbers matter more than others in their calculations.

The Stanford Cardinal (22-1) remain #1 in the latest NCAA volleyball RPI rankings, which is probably where they will remain until they lose. In a week of big upsets, the top 5 RPI teams remained unscathed and thus stayed in the exact same order as last week’s rankings. After some minor, relatively-insignificant movement in the 6-9 positions, the teams in spots 10-15 were also unchanged in this week’s poll.
Notable Movers:
Missouri dropped 6 spots from #24 to #30, and South Carolina jumped 3 spots from #29 to #26, after South Carolina beat Missouri 3-2 on Friday.
Illinois State is a half-game up on Northern Iowa in the Missouri Valley Conference standings, and after beating UNI on Saturday, they jumped 7 spots from #41 to #34 in the RPI rankings. Northern Iowa held steady at #15 in spite of the loss, though it was enough to move them out of the top 25 in both the AVCA coaches’ poll and the VolleyMob Power Rankings. All eyes are now on Valparaiso (22-7, 9-5 MVC) who need to make a big late-season run for the conference to become a 3-team league in the NCAA Championship tournament. An upcoming match against the MVC’s #3 team, Bradley, would help. A win against Illinois State to end the regular season, or a big upset in the conference tournament, would help even more.
Alabama plummeted 16 spots after losing to Georgia and LSU last week. They now have 3-straight losses. Kentucky, Florida, South Carolina, and Missouri are all now strong candidates to make the NCAA tournament out of the SEC, but it might take an Alabama win over Kentucky next week for the league to get a 5th team in.
After beating Notre Dame and Louisville, Florida State has climbed 5 more spots and now sits 32nd in the RPI rankings. In a league where it looked like Pitt and Louisville might start to pull away earlier, things have suddenly become very crowded (much like they were last year).

Western Kentucky University is asking their fans for help for a cause much more important than sports.
Over the next week, at its intercollegiate athletics events, the school will be holding a bone marrow donor registry event to try and find a donor for former Hilltoppers All-American volleyball player Alyssa Cavanaugh. Cavanaugh was preparing to start her first season as a professional player overseas when she was diagnosed with cancer – specifically Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL).
Now the school is asking for fans to give back to a player who gave so much in her 4 years at Western Kentucky y registering to become a bone marrow donor in hopes that one might match Cavanaugh.
BONE MARROW DONOR REGISTRY EVENTS:
Thursday – Women’s Basketball Exhibition vs. West Virginia State – 6 p.m. CT
WHAT TO EXPECT:
Registry tables will be set up by every normal entrance used for each sport’s home events in Diddle Arena and will be ready for fans when gates open. The doors for the women’s basketball game and the two volleyball matches will open an hour out while the doors for Saturday’s event will open at 12:30 p.m. CT. Registry tables will stay open to sign up throughout the duration of each event.
Fans can use their phones to text “Cure154” to 61474 to begin the sign-up process. QR codes will also be posted that fans can scan. Additionally, laptops will be available for anyone that doesn’t have a smart phone in hand.
The online registration process takes less than 10 minutes. Once registered, a cheek swab kit will be sent to your address within 3-7 business days. When the kit arrives, swab the inside of your cheek and return it then sit back and wait to be called if you are a match.
DONOR RESTRICTIONS:
Anyone between 18-44 years old is the best donor candidate as research has found donors in this window provide the highest transplant success.
1 IN 430:
About one in every 430 Be The Match Registry members in the United State go on to donate to a patient. WKU Athletics will give a free, red shirt reading “I believe in Alyssa Cavanaugh” and “#Win124” (similar to WKU Volleyball’s new warm-ups) to the first 430 individuals that complete the registration process to be a potential donor at this week’s events.
LOOKING AT THE STATISTICS:
Seventy percent of patients in need of a bone marrow transplant depend on the Be The Match Registry for a live-saving donor match because only 30 percent of the time is a donor match found within the immediate family. Cavanaugh is among that 70 percent in search of a donor with no matches found in her family.
A patient’s likelihood of having a match, available donor on the Be The Match Registry ranges from 76-97 percent depending on race and ethnicity.
IF YOU’RE A MATCH:
Bone marrow can be donated two different ways. The more common approach – used 75-80 percent of the time – is an outpatient procedure similar to donating platelets or plasma. Between 20-25 percent of the time, a surgical, outpatient procedure is used.
MORE INFORMATION:
Alyssa Cavanaugh – a 2017 WKU graduate who was a four-time All-American on the Lady Topper Volleyball team – was been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) on Sept. 5, 2018.
Cavanaugh is now undergoing treatment at a facility in her hometown of Louisville, Ky,. as well as a center in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Another topsy-turvy week in Division II volleyball led to another massive shakeup in the AVCA Division II Coaches’ poll standings.
Last week’s #1 Concordia – St. Paul, the 2-time NCAA Division II Champions, lost twice, resulting in the loss of all of their first-place votes and a drop to 6th in the new pool.
Two west coast teams, Cal State Bernardino (24 first place votes) and Western Washington (20 first place votes) have stepped into the void. While Western Washington was ranked higher than Cal State Bernardino last week, Cal State Bernardino jumped WW after winning 3-1 against then-#9 Cal State LA. Cal State Bernardino previously spent 2 weeks at #1 in week 6 and 7 of the poll.
Among top-10 teams, half (#1, #4, #5, #7, #9) from last week’s poll lost.
Other teams receiving 1st-place votes are Nebraska-Kearney, Northern State (2), and Tarleton State. None of those first place votes came from their own teams’ coaches, nor from coaches of teams that played them this season:
Wick Colchagoff – Northern State
Matthew Cribbin – Northern State
Philip Piontek – Tarleton State
Cade Smith – Nebraska Kearney
Also of note, Wingate, who was the last undefeated team remaining in Division II heading into last week, lost their first match of the season on Friday at unranked Anderson, and yet still made their first appearance in the top 25, checking in at #25.
Banned volleyball coach Rick Butler has asked an Illinois federal judge to reject class action certification in a civil lawsuit brought against him by a woman, Laura Mullen, that claims violations of the Illinois Physical Fitness Services Act and the illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act.
Specifically, Mullen, whose daughter was a member of the Sports Performance Volleyball Club, says that the club falsely advertised itself as a safe environment.
Butler’s argument is that the class-action suit is ‘too broad’ and ‘unmanageable,’ according to Law360.com, because it includes everyone who paid money to GLV Inc., which runs the club, between February 2013 and January 2018. Butler argues that the class potentially includes people who never interacted with Butler, and that Mullen cannot represent the other members of the proposed class who participated in certain programs in which her daughter did not.
The Stanford Cardinal remained at the top of the latest NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball RPI rankings, while Illinois jumped BYU for #2 after a week that included wins versus Maryland and the defending NCAA Champions Nebraska.
BYU, who play in the West Coast Conference – the best among the mid-majors, but still a far-cry from the level of competition in the Big Ten – fell a spot in spite of easy 3-0 sweeps against RPI #55 Portland and RPI #167 Gonzaga.
Minnesota made a big leap after a swing through the Wolverine state to play Michigan State and Michigan on Friday and Saturday, respectively. They jumped 3 spots in the latest rankings to sit 4th, which bumped Texas to 5th.
Pitt, after losing their first match of the season, fell 3 spots to 8th.
Other Significant Movers:
Northern Iowa, who moved back in to the AVCA top 25 after wins against Valapairso and Loyola over the weekend, jumped 5 spots in the latest RPI rankings, now sitting at 15th.
Washington State continued to power forward with 2 more wins against Utah and Colorado: playing their 5th-and-6th straight matches without their top scorer Taylor Mims. They jumped 2 spots to 10th.
Their Apple Cup rivals Washington dropped 9 spots and now sit 26th after losing on the same road trip.
Duke were the first double-digit movers, jumping 15 spots to #34 after they knocked Pitt from the ranks of the unbeatens on Sunday. That’s a signature win for the 7th-place team in the ACC to hang their hats on when selection season comes, though they probably need to win at least 4 of their last 6 contests to have a chance still. Another ACC team, Miami, jumped 15 spots to sit at #42 with a 13-6 record.

A November 5th non-conference match between Xavier and Dayton has been cancelled. The two teams were scheduled to play in Cincinnati in what would have been their 81st (or maybe 82nd) all-time meeting. No reason for the cancellation has been given. The Xavier men’s and women’s basketball teams each start their season with home games at the Cintas Center that week, with the men playing Tuesday and the women Wednesday.
The teams, who were Atlantic 10 Conference rivals for 28 years before Xavier left to join the Big East in 2013, played every season from 1979 until 2013 (their first year in a new conference). After a 1-year hiatus in 2013, snapping a 34-year streak, the teams resumed play from 2014-2017.
Xavier lists the all-time series record as 54 wins for Dayton and 26 for Xavier, while Dayton lists the all-time series record as 56 wins for Dayton and 25 for Xavier. The discrepancy comes from a few matches in the 1970s and early 80s, before women’s athletics were a part of the NCAA and therefore before solid record keeping existed. For example, according to Dayton, they won the teams’ first-ever matchup in 1971 via forfeit; Xavier doesn’t recognize the start of its program in its record books until 1973.
Xavier is 8-16 this season and ranked 179th in the RPI while Dayton is 18-7 and ranked 35th in the RPI. Dayton is 9-2 in Atlantic-10 and with 3 matches remaining in the regular season is ranked 2nd behind VCU in the conference standings. The A-10 determines its conference champion, and automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, via a conference championship tournament. Dayton has a better overall resume than VCU, though VCU has given Dayton their only two losses of conference play. No teams left on Dayton’s regular season schedule is ranked higher than 170 in RPI, though if they keep winning at least until they face VCU in the conference championship game, they at least have a chance at an at-large bid.
