2017 Smart Beach Tour
Karla Borger and Margareta Anna Kozuch topped 2016 Olympic champs Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst to earn a semifinal bid at the 2017 Smart Beach Tour in Germany.
Both teams won their first two matches, setting up a showdown in round 3. Ludwig and Walkenhorst won the Rio gold medal, but with Ludwig coming off of shoulder surgery, fell to Boger/Kozuch 2-0. In the other round 3 women’s match, Dutch Olympian Madelein Meppelink and her partner Sophie Van Gestel topped Laboureur/Sude 2-0. Borger/Kozuch and Meppelink/Van Gestel are now into the semifinals. Their opponents will be determined after tomorrow morning’s loser bracket concludes. Both Ludwig/Walkenhorst and Laboureur/Sude will have play-in matches to earn semifinal spots.
On the men’s side, it’s also one Dutch team and one German team into the semifinals. Home nation duo Sebastian Fuchs and Eric Stadie won their three matches to earn a semifinal bid, while Dutch Olympians Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen have the other semifinal match.
Tomorrow morning will kick off with the losers bracket matches, which will determine each team’s semifinal opponent. That starts at 8:30 local time. By mid-morning, the semifinals will begin, and the 3rd-place and gold-medal matches will take place in the afternoon.
