Brazil is the latest team to qualify for the women’s U20 World Championships after winning the CSV South American Championship for the age group last month in Uderaba, Brazil. They defeated the continent’s other major volleyball power, Argentina, to grab the 1st of 2 spots awarded to the confederation.
There are now 5 teams qualified for the championship that will be held from July 7th, 2016 in Boca del Rio and Cordoba, Mexico. The Dominican Republic, in beating the United States in the NORCECA U20 Championships, earned their continental spot, while China and Japan qualified in July out of Asia. NORCECA and South America both will award one more slot at the Women’s U20 Pan American Cup next April in Costa Rica. Mexico also qualifies as a host without taking one of the NORCECA spots (they placed 5th in the U20 qualifier).
Africa’s two spots will be awarded in early 2017, as will Europe’s at to-be-confirmed tournaments.
After each continent receives its 2 qualifiers, and with Mexico as the hosts, the next 5-best teams in the FIVB World Rankings will each be offered a bid. Presently, Peru, if they don’t qualify via the Pan American Cup, is in a strong position for an invite, and Turkey out of Asia are almost guaranteed of a spot. Puerto Rico, Chinese Taipei, and at least one team out of Europe will also stake a claim.
