Division 1 Top 10 Rankings Announced

There is only a few more weeks left of competition in the 2016 season before Selection Sunday. The NCAA Division 1 Women’s Volleyball Committee has announced their top 10 rankings on Wednesday, Nov. 9.

Using the selection criteria and the results of games as of Nov. 6, the defending NCAA champion Nebraska remained at the top mark with a 22-1 record. Following behind is Big Ten foe Minnesota (19-4) and Wisconsin (20-3) at second and third, respectively. Rounding out the top five is Big 12’s Tecas (18-3) at fourth and San Diego (21-3) from the West Coast Conference at fifth.

“This is the first time the Division 1 Women’s Volleyball Committee has released a Top 10 ranking to increase excitement and awareness about the sport,” said Lisa Peterson, chair of the committee and Deputy Athletic Director/SWA at the University of Oregon.

There is still a lot of volleyball to be played for the next few weeks, meaning these ranking could change.

Criteria of Rankings

The rankings are based off the criteria used to select the 64 teams for the Division 1 Women’s Volleyball Championship.

The criteria includes:

  • Strength of schedule
  • Rating Percentage Index
  • Head-to-head competition
  • Results versus common opponents
  • Significant wins and losses
  • Locations of contests

Additionally, input is provided by the regional advisory committee for consideration by the Division 1 Women’s Volleyball Committee.

The final 64 team bracket announcement will be revealed during a selection showing on Sunday, November 27, at 9 p.m. ET on ESPNU.

The first and second rounds of competition will take place December 1-3 at 16 non-predetermined campuses. The winners of these rounds will move the regional round, which will take place at four non-predetermined sites December 9-10. At these sites, four teams will compete in single-elimination semifinal competition, the winners of the matches will advance to the regional final.

The winners of the regional matches will advance to the D1 Women’s Volleyball Championship at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The semifinal matches will be held on December 15 at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. and will air live on ESPN2. The national championship match will take be December 17 at 9 p.m., also airing on ESPN2.

5. San Diego (21-3)
6. Kansas (22-2)
7. Stanford (16-6)
8. North Carolina (21-3)
9. Florida (22-2)
10. Washington (20-4)
