Egypt & Kenya Qualify for 2017 U23 Women’s World Championships

  0 Braden Keith | November 02nd, 2016 | International Volleyball, News

The U-23 women’s teams from Egypt and Kenya have qualified for the 2017 FIVB U-23 women’s World Championships, claiming the two spots allocated from the African Championship held last week in Kasarani, Kenya.

The Egyptian women won gold on the back of a 4-0 record, including a 3-1 win over Botswana in what had become theit gold-medal match (25-23, 23-25, 25-22, 25-19). Egyptian middle blocker Aya Ahmed was named the tournament MVP after 5 kills, 4 blocks, and a dig in the championship game.

The tournament included 5 nations in a round-robin format, so Egypt needed the last win against Botswana to finish 4-0 and ensure their tournament title. That run included a 3-1 upset over Kenya (18-25, 23-25, 20-25, 18-25) on the tournament’s second day.

Kenya locked up the second spot in the U-23 World Championships by beating Rwanda 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-22, 25-19) in their final matchup of the day. The winner of that match was due to wind up in silver medal position.

Not participating in the tournament was a team from Cameroon, who represented the country at the 2016 Olympic Games.

The pair join 7 other teams previously qualified for the championships that will run from August 27th-September 3rd in Slovenia. The hosts Slovenia; Turkey and Italy out of Europe; Brazil, Argentina, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba out of the Pan-American region; and now these two African nations.

Yet to be awarded are 2 qualifying spots from Asia. If China earns a spot based on that tournament, then the next-best FIVB-ranked team will go. Otherwise, China automatically qualifies as the defending champion.

Africa only had 1 qualifier in each of the first two editions of the U-23 World Championships. Kenya in 2013 and Egypt in 2015 each finished in last place in the tournament in the continent’s two previous appearances.
