Former Starting Libero Madeline Savage No Longer With Wofford

  1 Derek Johnson | February 02nd, 2018 | College - Women's Indoor, Division I Mid-Major, News

In 2016, Madeline Savage was the starting libero on Wofford as a true freshman. Last year wasn’t quite the same though, as she was dropped to a defensive specialist/bench role. Still, she was a key piece for the team, who will now be without her as she has transferred to the University of Georgia to focus on academics.

Savage, who is no longer listed on the 2018 roster, notes in her twitter profile that she is now part of the class of 2020 at Georgia. It is unknown if she is joining the Bulldogs’ volleyball team or is just attending the school and retiring from volleyball, as academics would be a viable reason to leave a program in which she had solid footing.

A 5’11” native of Johns Creek, Georgia, Savage came to Wofford and immediately made a mark with a team-high 478 digs as a freshman in 2016. She lost the starting libero role in 2017 though, and recorded 212 digs (1.75 per set) and 23 aces (0.19 per set).

Wofford went 22-11 last season and made it to the Southern Conference Tournament championship. In terms of returning players for 2018, they now possess just one defensive specialist/libero. The good news though is that it is Taylor Gill, a former Ole Miss transfer who led the team in digs as the starting libero in 2017.

Hi. My name is Madeline Savage. I would like to start off by saying that Wofford was one of the best opportunities of my entire life and a remarkably the greatest period of growth for me. I learned a lot about myself, and I would never change a thing about making the decision to play volleyball there. I made some of my best friends and life long friendships through my team and that is something I will hold onto forever.
I made this decision to apply to the University of Georgia to focus on my academics, because academics is something I greatly prioritize. I’m not sure if you know how the academic process works, but in order to transfer to a school academically, you must to apply at least 6 months before the term begins or the application deadline is passed. When I received the letter that I was accepted to the Terry College of Business at UGA after applying in the July, I was ecstatic yet very conflicted about making the decision. I loved my teammates, my professors, my study abroad friends from France, my sorority sisters and the tightly bounded community at Wofford.
After much thought and a heck of a lot of prayer, I am more than blessed and humbled to be a part the 2nd best business school in the nation on a full scholarship. Yes, I decided not to walk onto the team at Georgia or even play club volleyball so that I could focus on bettering myself and investing in myself for my future because I believe I have a lot to offer and hope to be a CEO one day.
With all this being said, I would respectfully ask if you could delete this article, as it is very surfaced level and a negative perception of my transferring out of Wofford. Thank you.
