The second day of the 2017 Montreux Volley Masters has concluded with China barely coming out on top over the Netherlands in Pool A. In Pool B, Germany fought through a tough five setter with Brazil to take their first victory of the event, while Poland uses a strong block to take down Thailand in four.
Pool A
China def. the Netherlands
- 3-2, (25-27, 25-22, 25-16, 17-25, 15-11)
The Netherland put up a tough fight against China but came up short in the end. If the Dutch squad would have eliminated a number of their 40 errors, they would have been able to take down the Chinese team. With the help of errors and digs China was able to down the Netherlands. The Dutch crew out-hit China tremendously 61-48, but it was not enough.
Xiaotong Liu led China with 17 points in the match, while Xiangyu Gong added another 14.
For the Dutch, Celeste Plak put down a match-best 24 points with Nika Daalderop adding another 17.

Pool B
Poland def. Thailand
- 3-1, (25-17, 22-25, 25-23, 27-25)
Poland used a stellar performance by Malwina Smarzek to take down Thailand, even then it was a difficult task. The four-set match was a tight race the entire time, with the final two sets coming down to the wire. Poland was able to forge ahead to take the victory over a strong Thailand team. The tough Polish block helped with their efforts with a 14-6 advantage, but Thailand had the backcourt defensive advantage with 64-51 digs.
Smarzek led all players with 27 points, 21 being kills, three blocks and three aces. Agnieszka Kakolewska added another 20 points for the Polish side with 12 being kills, five blocks and three aces.
For Thailand, Pimpichaya Kokram and Chatchu-On Moksri each contributed 17 points while Pleumjit Thinkaow added another 15 in the loss.
Germany def. Brazil
- 3-2, (25-17, 20-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-13)
Germany took down Brazil in a tough five-set battle. They played the back and forth game with sets, trading off until the fifth and deciding set. The fifth set came down to the wire for both teams, with the German crew coming out on top 15-13 to take their first match of the Montreux Masters. The German crew won their match over the Brazilian side by a matter of six points, with all statistical categories remaining fairly even.
Louisa Lippmann led Germany with 21 points, while Maren Brinker and Marie Schölzel each added another 15 points in the win.
For Brazil, Tandara Caixeta put down a team-best 19 points with Natalia Pereira adding another 14. Impressively at the net, Brazil’s Adenizia Da Silva blocked a match-best nine balls.
