Junior college addition Gianluca Grasso missed USC’s Friday night loss to BYU after spraining his ankle earlier in the week.
It’s a bit of a rocky start for Grasso, who just joined the Trojan program in late January. Previously, Grasso played at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, California. Last season he was the Pacific Coast Conference co-MVP as a freshman for Orange Coast, leading the team to state runner-up honors. USC’s press release notes that Grasso sprained his ankle in practice and missed the home match against BYU Friday.
Grasso, who is Brazilian, has a rich international volleyball background. Per his USC bio, Grasso’s first two years of high school came in Puerto Rico, and he finished his high school career in Willoughby, Ohio at the Andrews Osborne Academy, though he didn’t play volleyball his senior year. His parents were both Brazilian national teamers, and his older brother Marco played college ball at both Pacific and Ohio State. Marco Grasso was a setter for Ohio State’s NCAA Championship-winning team in 2016. His sister Carol also played college volleyball and had the same route through a junior college. Carol played at Salt Lake Community College, then at Cal State – Bakersfield. She also played beach volleyball at CSUB.
