Iranian Men Pick Up Tough Draw En Route To 2018 FIVB World Championship

As the hosts of the Asian Qualifiers for the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship, Iran has been handed a fairly difficult road.

In Pool A, Iran will play host to China, Korea, Qatar and a qualifier from Central Asia from August 10-14. The #7 world ranked Iran will begin their tough battle with Korea on August 11, the second day of the competition. At the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Iran was able to make it far in the tournament, jointly sharing the fifth place position.

Kazakhstan, India, Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan will compete in the World Championship Central Asian Qualification Round in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan from April 21-23 for a position in Pool A.

The hosts of Pool B, world ranked #15 Australia, will host their qualifier from July 12-16, taking on Japan, Chinese Taipei, Thailand and New Zealand. Australia and New Zealand will open up the competition on July 12, with Australian taking on Thailand the following day.

On the women’s side of things, Kazakhstan (Pool A) and Thailand (Pool B) will take on the roles of hosts for the Asian Qualifiers for the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship.

Kazakhstan will begin play with world rank #1 and 2016 Rio Olympic Champions, China on September 21. The remainder of the tournament will take place until the 24th of September, with Australia, Chinese Taipei and Fiji completing Pool A.

Pool B will begin their tournament on the same dates of Pool A (September 20-24). Joining hosts Thailand will be Korea, DPR Korea, Iran and Vietnam.

The top two teams from each group on the men’s and women’s side will advance to the 24-team 2018 FIVB Volleyball World Championship.
