Lewis University had their best offensive output in almost 2 years on Saturday in a 3-0 sweep of conference foes Quincy.

Lewis hit .449 in the game as a team (45 kills, 10 errors, 78 attacks), which is their highest hitting percentage since they hit .486, also against Quincy, in 2015.

Freshman outside hitter Kyle Budgee led the way for Lewis, with 13 kills and just a single error for a .571 hitting percentage. Jacob Schmiegelt, however, was a perfect 10-for-10 in the game. He’s just the 2nd player this season to have a perfect day offensively with at least 10 attempts (Princeton’s George Huhmann did it against George Mason 2 weeks ago).

Quincy’s David Slebum had 10 kills to lead Quincy with a .227 hitting percentage, along with 5 digs.

Quincy, Ill. – The No. 5 Lewis University men’s volleyball team recorded a season-best hitting percentage of .449 (45 kills, 10 errors, 78 attacks) as the visiting Flyers picked up the 25-21, 25-18, 25-19 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association victory over Quincy University at Pepsi Arena on Saturday (March 4) afternoon.

It was the best hitting performance by a Flyer squad since they hit .486 (45-11-70) against the same Hawks on April 11, 2015.

The victory extends Lewis’ season-best winning streak to seven matches and the Flyers improve to 15-3 overall and 9-2 in MIVA action. The Hawks drop to 3-14 on the campaign and 1-10 in conference play.

Lewis’ trio of freshman outside hitter Kyle Bugee (Los Altos, Calif./Homestead), senior outside hitter Trevor Weiskircher (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Catholic) and redshirt senior middle blocker Jacob Schmiegelt (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) combined for 34 kills – matching the entire output of Quincy kills as a team.

Bugee posted a match-high 13 kills and hit .571 (13-1-21), while Weiskircher had 11 putaways and hit .444 (11-3-18). Schmiegelt had a perfect hitting percentage of 1.000 with 10 kills on 10 swings with no errors and added a match-high three block assists.

Lewis sophomore setter Matt Yoshimoto (Ventura, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo) dished out a match-high 37 assists along with three block assists, while redshirt sophomore libero Michael Simmons (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) recorded six digs.

Lewis returns to action on Wednesday (March 8), as the Flyers meet No. 7 UCLA. Tip-off is set for 7 PM PT.

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men’s volleyball team lost in straight sets to No. 5 Lewis in Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association play on Saturday (March 4) afternoon at Pepsi Arena, 25-21, 25-18, 25-19.

The Hawks (3-14, 1-10 MIVA) were not able to stop the efficient attack of the Flyers (15-3, 9-2 MIVA), who hit .449 in the match and added six aces. Quincy hit a respectable .292, but was not able to keep up with Lewis.

Sophomore David Siebum (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) led the Hawks with 10 kills (.227) and a team-high five digs. Junior Shane McAdams (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge/San Diego City) added eight kills (.105).

Junior Anthony Winter (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/St. Edward) added seven kills (.429) and senior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) chipped in six (.556). Sophomore Adam Rogan (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) dished out 23 assists.

Kyle Bugee led the Flyers with 13 kills (.571) while Trevor Weiskircher put down 11 kills (.444) and Jacob Schmiegelt was perfect with 10 kills (1.000).

The Hawks will have spring break off before returning to the floor March 16 to take on Lincoln Memorial in Tennessee on March 16.
