Her Royal Highness Princess Ayah Bint Faisal was elected president of the Jordan Volleyball Federation after the JCF Congress held on May 3rd. Princess Ayah, 27, is the daughter of Prince Faisal bin Hussein and Princess Alia and is a niece of King Abdullah II.
She replaces Mr. Theyab Alshatarat, who had received a diploma in volleyball from the Soviet Union in 1984 and has worked as an FIVB contributing coach since 1996.
Princess Ayah is the eldest daughter of Prince Faisal bin Hussein and Princess Alia and the niece of King Abudllah II. Ayah, who has previously been appointed the honorary head of the Jordanian federation, was a competitive volleyball player in her youth and served as the captain of her school team.
Jordan’s men’s and women’s team are both tied for last with 0 points in the most recent FIVB Senior Rankings – which means 115th for women and 137th for men. The country has not had a prominent youth team at an international level, so much so that they do not appear in FIVB rankings in any age group other than senior, but the Princess did attend the first Junior National Team practice last weekend shortly after her election.
The country is not completely bereft of volleyball history, however. They are 4-time hosts of the men’s Arab Volleyball Champions, and finished as high as 4th in that event in 2002.
