Junior Kelsie Payne from Kansas has been named the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Player of the Week for her contributions to then-ranked No. 6 Kansas’s win against then-ranked No. 2 Texas in a five-set victory. It was the first match the Kansas Jayhawks had won against the Texas Longhorns in 26 straight attempts. The AVCA now has Kansas ranked as the No. 4 team in the nation, and Texas has fallen to the No. 5 spot.

Against Texas, Payne knocked down 21 kills (.254), along with 8 digs and 6 blocks. To add insult to injury, Payne is a native of Austin, Texas, the same city the Longhorns call home.
Payne has already achieved All-American (First Team) status, and was also named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week for her performance against Texas. Payne has been the Big 12’s Offensive Player of the Week a total of six times. Earlier this year, she was one of twelve selected for the United States Pan American Cup team.
