Lamar added a reinforcement to its 2017 roster through the junior college transfer of Iyaria Walker. The 5’11” middle blocker will come in with a junior classification and have two years left of eligibility.
Walker was previously with Pensacola State College for two years. In both seasons, she was a Panhandle Conference Champion as in 2016 she totaled 122 kills and was second on her team in blocks per set (0.74).
“She is a dynamic fast-twitch athlete that can play in the middle and help us there,” Lamar head coach Alan Edwards said in the release. “If we want to move her to the right side, we can move her to a pin. She hits the ball high and hard and will replace some of the offense we lost to graduation.”
Lamar had a rough non-conference slate last year when they went 0-12. However, they bounced back a bit with a 6-10 mark in Southland Conference play. It was completely opposite of 2015 when they went 10-4 before conference play but were 4-12 in the conference portion. Walker will look to bring with her some of the winning she had at the junior college level as Lamar looks to show improvement in 2017.
