Liberty University has announced former Texas A&M assistant coach Trevor Johnson as the program’s new head coach. Johnson is now the 8th head coach in program history.
Johnson has had quite the career at the NAIA level, winning a national title as a player, assistant coach and head coach – being the only person to accomplish the feat. As a head coach, Johnson has accumulated an 86-14 career record, leading both Concordia University’s women’s and men’s programs to NAIA national titles in 2012 and 2013.
Prior to Concordia, Johnson was with California Baptist as the men’s and women’s assistant coach, where the men’s team won the national championship in 2011. While at Cal Baptist, the NAIA powerhouse recorded big wins over nationally ranked Division I programs during his tenure with the squad including #2 BYU, #3 UC Irvine, #4 Stanford and #6 UC Santa Barbara.
Cal Baptist is Johnson’s alma mater, where he was a four-year starter, helping the team to back-to-back NAIA national championships in 2004 and 2005.
Most recently, Johnson was an assistant coach with Texas A&M during the 2016 and 2017 season. In 2016, the squad went 21-9, including an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. He also worked with the team’s setters and was the team’s recruiting coordinator, bringing in the #18 recruiting class in 2017.
This past season, Liberty went 12-19 and 8-8 in Big South conference play.
