2017 FIVB WORLD TOUR – GSTAAD MAJOR
- July 4 to July 9
- Five-Star Event
- Gstaad, Switzerland
- Schedule/Results
After receiving a bye to the Round of 16, the American pairing of Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena scored a win for a spot in the quarterfinals today. In a match against the second ranked team in the FIVB World Tour, Liamin/Krasilnikov (RUS), the American side came away with a 2-0 win; 21-18, 21-18. The kills were fairly even (28-27 in favor of Lucena/Dalhausser), but the U.S. pairing had six blocks to Russia’s two. This comes two days after Dalhausser had won his 50th match in his career at Gstaad, as he did so to round out pool play. It’s his 10th career visit to this event, as he won two titles with former partner Todd Rogers and one with Sean Rosenthal in 2014.
Two Brazilian teams pushed their way through to the semifinals as well, as Evandro/Andre Loyola will face Lucena/Dalhausser tomorrow. They got through the quarterfinal round by coming back from a 1-0 set deficit and defeating Canadian pair Pedlow/Schachter, 17-21, 21-12, 20-18. The other Brazilian team will play in the opposite side of the bracket as the two will hope to meet in the finals. Alvaro Filho/Saymon Barbosa won a three-set match over the U.S. group of Hyden/Doherty, 22-20, 19-21, 15-11.
Rounding out the final four is Kantor P./Losiak. The Polish duo inflicted some in-country carnage as they eliminated Fijalek/Bryl (POL) in straight sets, 21-13, 21-15.
The winners of tomorrow’s matchups will head to the Gold Medal match, which will also be tomorrow. The losers will meet in the Bronze Medal match not too long after the semifinals have concluded.
