Marshall head volleyball coach Mitch Jacobs has signed seven new student-athletes, the program announced Thursday.
Outside hitter/opposite Michaela Ahlenslager (Hercules, Ca.), middle blocker Isa Dostal (Ljublana, Slovenia), setter Autumn Elswick (Winfield, W.Va.), middle blocker/opposite Destiny Leon (Bon Air West Arouca, Trinidad), defensive specialist/outside hitter Sarah Schank (Naperville, Il.), outside hitter Ivana Trencheva (Razlog, Bulgaria) and outside hitter/middle blocker Mion Weldon (Walled Lake, Mi.) are all slated to play for the program this fall.
The 6’2” Ahlenslager played at Feather River College and was named first-team all-conference last fall and participated in the CCCAA (California Community College Athletic Association) state championships.
The 6’1” Dostal helped lead Gimnazija Ledina to four top three finishes in her high school district championship and an appearance in the national semifinals this season. Her under-18 club team finished sixth at the 2015-16 national championship, while her under-19 team took home a third-place finish in 2017-18.
The 5’5” Elswick was named all-conference and all-state last season as she helped lead Winfield High School to a runner-up finish in 2017. She also garnered honorable mention all-state honors as a junior. Her River Cities Thunder Volleyball Club team won Gold for their age group at the 2018 Junior Volleyball Association World Challenge.
The 6’3 Leon played at San Jacinto College last season, capturing a second runner-up regional finish. Her Technocrats Club team won the Premiere League tournament and she represented Trinidad and Tobago in Costa Rica at the Cazova Junior Championships.
The 5’8” Schank comes to the program after starting for four years at Naperville Central High School. She was a team captain as a sophomore, junior and senior, earning first-team all-conference, all-area and second-team all-state honors in 2017. As a senior, she racked up 405 kills, 201 digs and 62 service aces.
The 6’0” Trencheva played at the College of Southern Idaho for two seasons, helping the team to a runner-up finish nationally, which also included a regional title and two conference championships. In two seasons, she totaled 140 kills, 35 blocks and 10 service aces.
The 5’9” Weldon was the team captain of the National 16 West of Legacy Volleyball Club and the National 18’s Legacy Volleyball Club as well. She also lettered in track and field during her time at Walled Lake Central High School, where she started for three seasons in volleyball and was team captain twice. She earned all-conference and all-region honors twice as well. She helped lead Walled Lake to its first district title in 10 years as a senior.
“Going into the spring, we knew we had a lot of work to do,” said Jacobs. “I’m very proud of the focus that our staff put into this effort, led by recruiting coordinator Danielle Marante. I’m sure that no stone was left unturned. I believe that, with the addition of this group to our early signees Gabby and Jojo Coulter, we’ve put together a group that will make Thundering Herd Nation proud.”
Marshall’s 2018 schedule will be announced in the coming weeks.
