Middle Tennessee is adding Alyssa Mathis, a transfer from San Diego State, to its roster for 2017. Mathis spent two seasons with the Aztecs, one redshirting, and will be an immediately eligible redshirt sophomore in 2017 as she has three years left of play.
A 6’1″ outside hitter, Mathis spent two seasons at San Diego State – one redshirting and the other as a backup as she did not appear in any matches. Originally from Spring Hill, Florida, she was all-conference her final two seasons at Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School.
“Alyssa is super dynamic and she has a great arm,” Middle Tennessee head coach Chuck Crawford said in the team’s release of all their signings. “We would like to see her help carry the load on the outside. With our returners in the middle and right-side, they will pull away the attention from her and allow her to be highly effective. She is extremely athletic and physical. Along with her high volleyball I.Q. she will be able to terminate and beat the blocks.”
The competition will be fierce at the outside hitter position for Mathis, as in total there are five of them on the roster. All four other outside hitters are returnees (three juniors and one sophomore) who played 70 or more sets in 2016. Still, if Mathis impresses in the preseason and early in the year, she could garner solid playing time.
Mathis joins a couple of Auburn transfers headed to Middle Tennessee as transfers. In total, there are six newcomers to the roster after Middle Tennessee finished with a 5-24 record last season, as they will look for their first winning record since 2014.
