Missouri State’s Lynsey Wright Claims MVC Player of the Week

Following a ranked victory over Ohio State on the road and an appearance in the latest VolleyMob Top 25, Missouri State middle blocker Lynsey Wright earned the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week award.

Beyond helping her team to a 2-1 mark and earning all-tournament honors at the D.C. Koehl Classic, Wright put up big numbers in the middle for the Bears. Over the three-match haul, she notched 3.08 kills and 0.92 blocks per set with a .462 hitting percentage. She was a key component of that victory over then #20 Ohio State as she logged 15 kills and no errors to hit .577 along with four blocks, as the win helped propel the Bears to #23 in our rankings.

Wright wasn’t the only player honored by the MVC for her week’s worth of action, as Courtney Pence of Illinois State and Rylee Cookerly of Valparaiso snagged weekly accolades as well.

Junior defensive specialist/libero Courtney Pence earned the MVC Defensive Player of the Week award after contributing 7.18 digs per set to Illinois State’s defense last week. She made it to the all-tournament team as Illinois State defeated host Saint Louis in the event’s first match before she posted 36 digs in the team’s second match against Kennesaw State that went four sets. Currently, Pence leads the NCAA in digs.

Last but not least was Rylee Cookerly of Valparaiso who received the conference’s Freshman of the Week honors. She likely wasn’t far off of Defensive Player of the Week either as she totaled 7.10 digs per set as the newest school in the Missouri Valley Conference collected a victory in three tries last week.
