Missouri’s Alyssa Munlyn Named SEC Player of the Week

The SEC weekly awards are out, with Missouri sophomore Alyssa Munlyn earning multiple honors. Munlyn was named the week 9 Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week. A pair of Alabama-based atheltes were also honored, as Alabama’s Krystal Rivers was named Offensive Player of the Week and Auburn’s Alexa Filley was named Setter of the Week. Freshman of the Week went to Kentucky’s Leah Edmond.

SEC Volleyball Week 9 Player of the Week:

Alyssa Munlyn • Missouri Sophomore • MB • 6-2 • Suwanee, Ga.

Offensive Player of the Week:

Krystal Rivers • Alabama Redshirt Senior • RS • 5-11 • Birmingham, Ala.

Rivers averaged 9.14 points and 8.00 kills per set over two matches this past weekend for the Crimson Tide. At Arkansas, she recorded a match-high 25 kills and a season-high four service aces. At Ole Miss, Rivers posted her sixth double-double of the season Sunday with 31 kills and 11 digs. With her 31 kills on Sunday, she became the first player in program history to total five matches in a season and six for a career with 30-plus kills. For the week, Rivers led the team in kills (56), hitting percentage (.425), aces (6) and blocks (3).

Defensive Player of the Week:

Alyssa Munlyn • Missouri Sophomore • MB • 6-2 • Suwanee, Ga.

Munlyn registered 17 total blocks in a pair of wins for Missouri as the Tigers have moved into sole possession of first place in the SEC. Mizzou matched its season high with 15.0 total blocks against LSU, as Munlyn led the way with nine total blocks, setting a 2016 season high. Against #21 Kentucky, Munlyn tallied eight total blocks, including a team-high three solo blocks, helping reset Mizzou’s 2016 season high in total blocks (16.0). For the week, she averaged 2.12 blocks per set, while her season average of 1.28 ranks her fourth in the conference.

Setter of the Week:

Alexa Filley • Auburn Junior • 5-9 • Louisville, Ky.

Filley guided Auburn to a pair of road wins with 91 assists to her credit. She picked up the second triple-double of her career and of this season in the five-set win at Ole Miss, having 10 kills, 45 assists, and 18 digs. Filley is the only student-athlete in the SEC this season to have recorded at least one triple double. She finished with a double-double in the 3-1 victory at Arkansas, totaling 46 assists and a match-best 19 digs. Filley’s two matches gave her the 12th and 13th double-double of her season, good for second place in the SEC.

Freshman of the Week:

Leah Edmond • Kentucky Freshman • OH • 6-0 • Lexington, Ky.

Edmond put up a double-double in both contests this weekend. She registered 14 kills and 13 digs in the sweep of South Carolina. Edmond then had a team-best 21 kills and season-best 14 digs in the five-set match with Missouri. She averaged 5.06 points and a team-best 4.38 kills per set during the weekend, and she was third on team in digs at 3.38. Edmond also registered a service ace in each contest and contributed four total blocks.
