Around the world, there are nearly 375 U.S. volleyball players competing overseas in professional leagues, new USA Volleyball CEO Jamie Davis has recently brought up the idea of a domestic volleyball league – and he’s gaining a lot of support.
“With the success of out national teams, the high volleyball television/streaming ratings from the 2016 Olympics and out membership growth, we are confident that such a domestic league will succeed now when past attempts have failed,” said Davis.
Davis is looking at a target launch date for the league by 2020.
U.S. athletes have expressed that they would fully back a domestic pro league. Players that have shared their interests and the positives of a domestic league, where National Team athletes and U.S. players could really benefit are Rachael Adams and Tori Dixon.
“I am fully behind and support the launch of a professional league in the USA,” Adams said. “It would be an amazing alternative for American players who want to continue playing but don’t want to spend 8-9 months out of the year living and playing in a foreign country away from their family and friends.”
The launch of a domestic league would be a challenging task but if successful, it could benefit a lot of players. Dixon expressed that a lot of players end their volleyball careers early because they don’t want to leave their families behind.
“By having a league (In the USA), I think it would prolong a lot of careers and give an outlet for people to play post-college,” said Dixon.
