STORYLINES TO FOLLOW

Rivalry Night in Gainesville: One of our first major conference NCAA rivalry matches of this year’s tournament takes place tonight between Florida and Florida State. The Gators won a share of the SEC title this year and beat Florida State on the road 3-1 back in September. The Seminoles are part of an ACC that only placed 3 teams into the NCAA Tournament (the lowest of any major conference) but is currently 3-0 in matches with all three programs still alive.

In-state battles abound: Florida and FSU aren’t the only in-state rivals clashing tonight. UNC takes on Coastal Carolina in a second-straight North Carolina matchup for the Tar Heels. Penn State takes on Pittsburgh in a battle for Pennsylvania supremacy. And Texas and SMU face off in what’s a second-straight Texas shootout for both programs.

Upset alert: The first of the seeded teams fell in round 2: #5 Kansas to unranked Creighton. Could another top-16 program fall tonight? Pitt has a couple of big upsets this year and takes on the lowest-seeded team, Penn State. Meanwhile Ohio State is one of just two teams to beat #1 Nebraska this year, and takes on #14 Kansas State. And don’t count out Florida State against #11 Florida – they have the closest RPI spread of any matchup tonight, with Florida at #10 and FSU at #22.
