The USC men’s volleyball squad will host the nine-team pre-season 2016 USC Fall Tournament this Saturday (Oct. 22) in the Galen Center Pavilion.
The Trojans, who will split their squad into 2 teams (a “Cardinal” and a “Gold” team), will be joined by Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opponents Long Beach State, Pepperdine, UC Santa Barbara, Cal State Northridge and Cal Baptist, plus non-conference foes Grand Canyon and Concordia.
Admission is free. The Galen Center Pavilion is adjacent to the Galen Center, with the volleyball courts on the upstairs level.
Competition begins at 8:45 a.m. with the first 3 matches of the tourney and continues with matches at 10 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 1:15 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and the final matches at 3:45 p.m. (For the complete tournament schedule, see below.)
USC Cardinal faces Concordia at 8:45 a.m., UC Santa Barbara at 10 a.m., Cal Baptist at 2:30 p.m. and Cal State Northridge at 3:45 p.m., all on the Exposition Court. USC Gold hosts Cal Baptist at 8:45 a.m., Pepperdine at 11:15 a.m., Grand Canyon at 1:15 p.m.and UC Santa Barbara at 3:45 p.m., all on the Figueroa Court.
All matches will be the best of 3 sets, with the first 2 sets played to 25 points and the third set to 15 points. For matches that are decided in 2 sets, teams have the option of playing a non-counting third set.
USC is coming off a rebuilding season in 2016 when it went 7-19 overall and 5-17 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation under new head coach Jeff Nygaard. Thirteen lettermen return from that team, including at 4 starting spots (3-year starting middle blocker Andy Benesh, 2-year starting outside hitter Lucas Yoder, opposite hitter Jon Rivera and co-starting setters Jack Yoder and Gert Lisha),
After Saturday’s USC Fall Tournament, the Trojans continue their pre-season competition by playing at the UCLA SAC Tournament on Nov. 11 and 12. Troy begins its 2017 regular season with a non-conference match at Concordia on Jan. 3 and then playing in the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge, meeting host Ohio State on Jan. 6 and then Penn State on Jan. 7, before opening MPSF play at home against Long Beach State on Jan. 11.
