North Texas Means Business vs Mississippi State

North Texas def. Mississippi State 3-2 (25-23, 25-20, 15-25, 21-25, 15-5)

In a 5-set thriller in Denton, Texas, the Mean Green overcame the Bulldogs Thursday night. North Texas is now 4-1 on its home court, its lone loss coming at the hands of then-ranked 12th Baylor.

Mississippi State held the edge with a .194 hitting clip to North Texas’ .193. The Mean Green served up 12 aces in the victory.

In the opening set, UNT got off to a hot start with 7-straight points. The Bulldogs battled their way back into contention and played through 4 ties before the Mean Green put the set away, 25-23, with a 4-1 push.

UNT jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the second set and never trailed from there. The Mean Green went up, 2-0, in the match with a 25-20 win.

Mississippi State awoke in the third set, going up 7-3 early. The Bulldogs controlled the rest, notching the final 6 points for a dominant 25-15 win.

In the fourth set, Mississippi State used a 5-1 stretch to break an 18-18 tie. The Bulldogs evened the match, 2-2, with a 25-21 win.

UNT recovered to record a dominant 15-5 win in the fifth set to stifle the Bulldogs’ comeback hopes.

A trio of players posted double figure kill totals to lead the Mean Green, including Jordyn Williams (15), Valerie Valerian (15) and Rhett Robinson (10). Karley York notched a double-double with 45 assists and 11 digs, while Olivia Petnicki logged a team-high 18 digs.

Deja Robinson was the lone Bulldog in double figures with 15 kills. Morgan Kath registered 41 assists, and Kendall Murr notched 13 digs.
