Northeastern Wins 5th Straight Pennsylvania Boys HS State Title

The Pennsylvania boy’s high school volleyball championship has concluded with two new champions for the 2017 season. In the AA division, Northeastern took the title, while Central York won the AAA division.

AA Division

  • Northeastern def. Beaver County Christian 3-1, (25-13, 25-22, 21-25, 25-20)

Northeastern started the match with an easy win, followed by a second set victory to go ahead 2-0 in the match. Beaver County took the third set, but Northeastern fought back in the fourth to take the title.

This is the fifth consecutive state championship for the team, becoming the first team since 1971 to win five straight volleyball titles when Haverford high won six in a row.

Cole Brillhart led the winning team with 30 kills and five blocks. Wyatt Tyson put down another 12 kills while setter Jacob Cheuvront handed out 56 assists.

AAA Division

  • Central York def. North Allegheny 3-1, (20-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-23)

The victory of Central York was not an easy task, as they dropped the first set of the match. The next three sets were tough battles for the new state champions, with the fourth set ending in a 25-23 win.

The state title is the seventh in program history, with their last win coming in 2014 over North Allegheny.

Cole Johnson led the team with 22 kills, 11 digs and five aces on the day. Johnson is being recruited by top-tier colleges such as UCLA, USC and Penn State.
