The first official NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball RPI has been released today with more to come throughout the season. The ratings are made up of a formula that takes into account record (at home, on the road and overall) along with opponents record and wins over higher-ranked teams.
Coming in at number one in the initial release is Penn State – currently ranked second in our latest VolleyMob Top 25 Power Rankings. Penn State’s top spot is likely in big part from their two wins against Stanford in addition to victories over Colorado, West Virginia and Illinois – all top 50 teams.
Following the Nittany Lions and rounding out the top five of the RPI is Florida, Texas, Minnesota and the surprise of the group: Kentucky.
Other notables such as Nebraska (6), Wisconsin (7), Stanford (10) and Kansas (11) sit right around the top 10. Compared to our latest Power Rankings, BYU comes in lower than expected at 18 while Auburn (21) and Louisville (22) soar into the top 25.
In terms of mid-majors, Creighton (8) takes the cake as the highest ranked, followed by BYU, Wichita State (23), San Diego (25) and Cal Poly (28).
