For the second straight week and eighth overall time in her career, Penn State’s Haleigh Washington has been named as the Big Ten Player of the Week. Others being recognized this week are swept by Minnesota players in Molly Lohman, Samantha Seliger-Swenson and Jasmyn Martin.
Player of the Week
Haleigh Washington – Penn State – senior
Washington helped Penn State to wins over Ohio State an Northwestern this week, averaging 3.9 kills per set on a .531 hitting clip and 1.9 blocks per set. In the teams five-set win over the Buckeyes, Washington slammed down a career-best 20 kills on a .500 hitting percentage along with eight blocks and two digs. Against Northwestern, Washington added another 11 kill, seven blocks and three digs on a .588 hitting performance.
This is Washingtons second straight week being named as Big Ten Player of the Week and third this year. Overall this is the eighth time in her career with the Nittany Lions.
Defensive Player of the Week
Molly Lohman – Minnesota – senior
Lohman put up a strong block this week for the Gophers, stopping 17 balls on in the teams wins over Wisconsin and Michigan. In the teams win over Wisconsin, Lohman blocked seven blocks while posting another 10 against Michigan while adding five kills and three digs.
This is Lohman’s third career Defensive Player of the Week honor and her second of the season.
Setter of the Week
Samantha Seliger-Swenson – Minnesota – junior
Across the team’s two matches on the week, Seliger-Swenson dished out 96 assists for an average of 12.0 assists per set. In the Gophers five-set win over Wisconsin, Seliger-Swenson posted her season-best 62 assists along with 12 digs while handing out another 34 and seven digs in the teams win over Michigan.
Seliger-Swenson has received this honor nine times in her career and this is her third of the season with her last one being on September 18.
Freshman of the Week
Jasmyn Martin – Minnesota – freshman
On the week, Martin posted 3.4 kills per set on a .328 hitting clip as the Gophers downed Wisconsin and Michigan. Martin registered a career-best 17 kills in the teams win over the Badgers while adding another 10 in the Gophers win over Michigan.
This is Martin’s first Freshman of the Week honor, with Minnesota’s Stephanie Samedy garnering the award earlier this year on September 18.
