Class of 2019 setter Joe Karlous has committed to the Pepperdine men’s volleyball program. Karlous would henceforth join the Waves for the winter of 2020 season as a freshman.
After being selected as one of four setters to the training team, Karlous was officially named one of two at the position to the USA Volleyball Boys’ Youth National Team. Over the summer he started in all but one match at the NORCECA U-19 Continental Championships, where the team qualified for the FIVB World Championships next summer.
Standing at 6’0″, Karlous is in his senior year at Newport Harbor High School in California. In the 2018 season as a junior, he helped guide the team to a 35-2 mark and a CIF Southern Section Division 1 Championship match appearance. Individually he had 1,008 assists, 121 digs and 66 blocks as he was named a Daily Pilot Boys’ Volleyball Dream Team first-team performer.
He also plays for Balboa Bay Volleyball Club, where he took gold at the Boys’ Junior Nationals from 2015-2017. He was also the MVP of the BJNC for 15 Opens and 16 Opens.
The commitment represents the third for Pepperdine that has been registered in the VolleyMob Recruiting Database. It’s also the second for the team from a member of the USA Volleyball Boys’ Youth National Team, as right side Scott Solan has also stated his intentions to attend Pepperdine. The other commit is outside hitter Shane Atkins.
“Getting on campus and being around the coaches and being around the players, I just knew that was the place where I want to spend the next four years of my life,” Karlous told the Los Angeles Times following his commitment.
Pepperdine finished 2018 at 15-8 overall and 8-4 as a member of the MPSF en route to a final ranking of #9 in the VolleyMob Men’s Top 20. They’re also slated at #7 in the Way-Too-Early VolleyMob Men’s Top 20 Power Rankings for 2019.
Thanks VOLLEYMOB :)!
