Punahou Wins Division I Hawaii Boys State Title With Undefeated Season

The 2017 Hawaii high school boys volleyball tournament has wrapped up this past weekend, crowning Punahou and Hawaii Baptist as the 2017 state champions.

Division I

Punahou faced KS-Hawaii in the finals of the Division I Hawaii Boys state tournament, with Punahou coming out on top in four sets 3-1, (21-18, 19-25, 25-20, 25-17).

Leading Punahou was Ryan Wilcox who put down 20 kills and 10 digs for a double-double in the match while Ethan Siegfried added another 14 kills on a .433 hitting clip, eight digs, and three service aces.  Also contributing a double-double was Kana’i Akana with 13 kills and 10 digs. In the backcourt, Shea Suzumoto picked up a match-best 21 digs.

For KS-Hawaii two players recorded double-doubles – Avery Enriques (16 kills and 13 digs) and Jai Makuakane (15 assists and 13 digs). Two other players picked up double-digit digs – Addison Enriques with 13 and Tristen Cross with 10.

Both teams entered the championship match with undefeated records, but Punahou was able to complete the perfect season with a 19-0 record.

Division II

Hawaii Baptist was about to sweep their way to a Division II state title over Kapaa 3-0, (25-17, 25-23, 25-20).

Michael Johnson led Hawaii Baptist with 13 kills and 15 digs for a double-double while setter Davin Rausch also recorded a double-double with 30 assists and 14 digs. Dru Pang picked up another 12 digs for the Eagles.

For Kapaa, Carson Schmick and Saxsem Shiira each put down 12 kills, Shiira on a .571 hitting clip while also adding four blocks. Pomai Rabajo-Kaiwi picked up 18 digs while Kurt Napoleon added another 17 digs.
