Rhode Island head coach Bob Schneck will retire at the end of the 2016 season. The program’s only head coach since women’s volleyball was recognized as a championship sport by the NCAA in 1981, Schneck’s retirement will become official on Dec. 31.
“Bob Schneck has been a legend in the volleyball community for the past 36 years,” Rhode Island Director of Athletics Thorr Bjorn said. “I have truly enjoyed working with him since I have been at Rhode Island and I wish him all the best in retirement.”
Now in his 36th season, Schneck entered 2016 as one of 20 active Division I coaches with 600 career victories. He currently has a career mark of 606-492 as the Rams prepare for the conference portion of this year’s schedule.
In connection with Schneck’s retirement, URI is hosting a Rhode Island Volleyball Alumni Reunion during Homecoming Weekend, Saturday, Oct. 22. There will be an alumni reunion tent outside of Keaney Gymnasium at 10 a.m. as part of Rhodyville, before the football game against Maine. That evening, Schneck and the Rams host Fordham in Atlantic 10 play at 5 p.m.
“When I was asked how I would like to celebrate my upcoming retirement, I sat down and really thought about it,” Schneck said. “What I would enjoy most is having as many of our former Rhody volleyball players as possible return to URI to spend Homecoming weekend with us. It’s been quite a run, with so many great memories and so many wonderful people. It would really be special to have everyone back here in Kingston again. I hope our alumni will take me up on this invitation to return to campus and celebrate all of our great memories over the years.”
To be part of the reunion and to help wish Schneck well in his retirement, please contact Samantha Rodriguez in the URI Alumni Relations office at (401) 874-4536 or via email at [email protected].’
