Following the conclusion of the 2017 CEV European Women’s Championships, Serbia has claimed the top spot in the most recent CEV Rankings after their win over the Netherlands in the finals.
The Serbian team has been a force to be reckoned with this summer, taking third at the FIVB World Grand Prix and now first at the European Championships. The move to #1 in the CEV Rankings dethrones Russia who has sat atop of the rankings for quite some time but struggled at the European Championships late. Russia’s coach was fired just hours before the start of the European championships, to which they finished pool play with an unbeaten record. This propelled them straight to the quarterfinals where they met Turkey, who remains at #5 in the rankings, for a second time, losing in straight sets.
The silver medalist this year, the Netherlands, moved up their ranking to #4, improving four positions following their strong performance at the championships.
Though Georgia didn’t win any matches at the European Championships, they did move up seven spots to #28 after they took a set away from Croatia. That one set loss was enough to throw the Croatian team down two spots to #10 in the rankings. In other big moves, Portugal and Montenegro each moved up five positions to #21 and #22, respectively.
