2017 South American Women’s Volleyball Championships

With the South American Women’s Championship in Columbia also acting as the First Qualifying tournament for the Confederacion Sudamericana de Voleibol (CSV) spots in the 2018 FIVB Women’s World Volleyball Championship, the next five days should be very entertaining. The tournament will be played as a round robin and have six teams participate: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Peru and Venezuela.

Since 1995, the Brazilian women have won the South American Women’s Championship every time it has been played. Currently with the Brazilian women ranked 4th by the FIVB, they are the favorites for taking the first of two CSV spots in the 2018 World Championships. Ze Roberto is more or less bringing his World Grand Prix winning team, with only Gabi being an addition for the South American Championships. Gabi had not played in the World Grand Prix this year.

Columbia (FIVB Ranking 30) who is hosting the tournament is looking to improve on their performance from Group 2 of the World Grand Prix. Columbia had been the best of the three South American teams in Group 2.

Peru (29) and Argentina (tied 10) are looking to be the best team outside of Brazilian to give themselves a mental advantage going into the Second Qualifying Tournament for CSV later in 2017.

Venezuela (113) would like to pull a surprise in what has been a trying year for the country let alone the women’s volleyball team. At least the flight to Columbia is much closer than the World Grand Prix trip to Australia.

Chile (114) is very much an unknown quantity and not expected to pose a threat to the rest of the teams.

Schedule for August 15

  • Chile vs. Venezuela
  • Brazil vs. Argentina
  • Peru vs. Columbia
