After leading Minnesota to a pair of victories to open Big Ten action, sophomore Stephany Samedy earned her first AVCA Player of the Week nod. It is ninth national player of the week award in Golden Gopher volleyball history and the first since Sarah Wilhite received recognition on Nov. 29, 2016.

In a sweep of then-ranked 4th Penn State, Samedy registered a double-double with 14 kills and 10 blocks, while posting 5 blocks. She closed conference-opening weekend with 13 kills, a .310 attack percentage and 4 blocks in Minnesota’s win in straight sets over Maryland.

On the week, the 6-2 right side hitter averaged 4.50 kills per set, 2.17 digs per set and 1.50 blocks per set, while hitting .290. For her efforts, Samedy was named Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in her collegiate career.

The Claremont, Fla., native leads the 7th-ranked Golden Gophers offensively with 114 kills on the season for a 3.93 kills per set average. She is also third on the team in blocks with 38 on the season (1.19 per set).

Samedy, who is a preseason All-Big Ten selection, was Minnesota’s first freshman to earn All-America first team distinction last season. She was unanimously named to the All-Big Ten and All-Freshman squads and secured North Region Freshman of the Year accolades after appearing in every set and match and leading Minnesota with 478 kills (4.05 per set).
