The UMKC women’s volleyball program has landed George Mason transfer Mikala Wells for 2018. A junior-to-be in the fall of 2018, Wells will have two years left of play. She transferred at semester too and got extra time with the Roos, where she will be immediately eligible.
A 5’11” outside hitter, Wells move to UMKC sends her back home. She is originally from Topeka, Kansas where she attended Shawnee Heights – a little over an hour drive to Kansas City. At the school she was named the Centennial League Player of the Year back in 2015.
That led to her time at George Mason, where she immediately earned playing time as a true freshman in 2016. She then saw similar action in 2017 as a sophomore when she rose her kill, dig and block numbers (both in total and per set). For her two year-stint with the Patriots, she recorded 353 kills (2.37 per set) on a .116 hitting percentage, 274 digs (1.84 per set), 44 blocks (0.30 per set), 28 aces (0.19 per set) and 16 assists.
The loss leaves the Patriots, who went 6-21 and 2-12 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in 2017, with five players who can play outside hitter on their current 2018 roster.
For UMKC, they have three outside hitters from their 2017 roster that still have eligibility to return in 2018 and join Wells at the position.
“Mikala is an athletic and smart attacker with a terrific arm,” UMKC head coach Christi Posey said in the team’s release. “She will add much needed depth to our outside hitter position – having transferred at semester, she immediately acclimated herself to our team and to the expectations of our program as she is so coachable and outgoing. Our team embraced her right from the start.”
The Roos finished 2017 with a 9-19 season and a 5-9 mark playing in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC).
