An Undefeated Season Leads To Penfield Taking New York State Title

New York crowned five new state champions on November 20th at the Glens Falls Civic Center in Glens Falls, New York.

Class AA

Penfield took the Class AA state title after defeating Connetquot in four sets 3-1, 20-25, 27-25, 25-12, 25-20.

To led Penfield Johanna Gregory put down 16 kills on a .452 hitting percentage also adding seven blocks to her tally. Setter Alea Steigerwald recorded a double-double with 43 assists and 13 digs. Four other Penfield players picked up double-digit digs – Jamie Rogers (24), Lindsay Hernady (16), Emily Harnschfeger (16) and Elisabeth Lawatsch (13).

Connetquot’s Cassandra Patsos put down 21 kills, while from the back row Mackenzie Taylor picked up 18 digs and Mackenzie Cole added 17.

Class A

Walter Panas defeated Kings Park in a three set sweep 3-0. 25-12, 25-17, 25-23.

Yvette Burcescu hammered down 13 kills, while Jenn Braun added nine. Defensively, Melissa Lussier had eight blocks, while Lauren Feeley picked up 16 digs.

Class B

In a five set battle, Honeoye Falls-Lima defeated Owego Free Academy 3-2, 13-25, 25-16, 25-21, 22-25, 25-20.

Leading Honeoye offensively was Gillian Kurtic with 30 kills and a .441 hitting percentage also adding five blocks. Recording a double-double was Grace Chlebove with 20 kills and 17 digs, also adding five blocks and three aces.

Three other Honeoye players picked up double-digit digs – Sydney Uthe (17), Haley Smith (15) and Anna Piazza (11).

Class C

In a quick state championship match, Eden defeated Pawling 3-0, 25-10, 25-11, 25-10.

Sam Burgio led Eden with a double-double of 17 kills on a .538 hitting percentage and 12 digs. Burgio also added four aces in the win.

Class D

Panama battled their way to a five set victory over Argyle for the state title 3-2, 17-25, 26-24, 24-26, 25-13, 25-14.

Leading Panama was Madalyn Bowen with a double-double of 30 kills and 16 digs. Setter Quinn Payne also recorded a double-double with 51 assists and 14 digs.

Danielle Sill led Argyles efforts with a double-double of 15 kills and 22 digs, also adding six blocks. In the back court, four other players picked up double-digit digs – Autumn Aubrey (25), Jessie Wilson (21), Maurissa Armstrong (21) and Jada Phillips (11).
