Last week, the Ohio State men’s and women’s volleyball team got a tour of the mid-construction Covelli Arena, which will serve as the team’s new home beginning in the spring of 2019. The 3,700 seat arena, which is running a cost of $30 million, will include new coaches’ offices and player locker rooms for both the men’s and women’s volleyball teams, fencing teams, gymnastics teams, and wrestling team.
Originally slated to be open this year, Ohio State now plans to move into the arena in April 2019 instead – meaning that both teams will play their entire 2018-2019 seasons in the St. John Arena. At over 13,000 seats, St. John Arena holds roughly 10x the average per-game attendance for the Ohio State women’s team last season. The move to the Covelli Arena should create a more intimate and intense space for competition.
The shell of the arena is basically complete, and the foundation for the higher rows (of presumably non-retractable seating) can also be seen, giving a sense of scale to the facility.
See pictures and videos from inside the arena taken by both teams below.
