With the rapid rate of boys volleyball growing around the country, Urbana University announces the addition of men’s volleyball to their athletics program. Today, there are nearly 55,000 students playing volleyball, with men’s volleyball ranking third in overall academic performance at the NCAA level. In addition, the University will also add wrestling to their athletic docket.
Urbana will schedule their matches with Division I and Division II programs that compete for the NCAA Men’s Championship. The teams first season will be the 2018-19 season, where they will compete as an independent until they eventually join the MIVA (Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association). Teams currently in the MIVA:
- Ohio State
- Ball State
- Fort Wayne
- Lewis
- Loyola Chicago
- McKendree
- Lindenwood
- Quincy
Grand Canyon was a part of the MIVA in the 2017 season but is moving to the MPSF for the 2018 season. Other schools in the proximity of Urbana are – Alderson-Broaddus, Charleston, Penn State, St. Francis and George Mason.
“I’m excited to add wrestling and men’s volleyball for the opportunity it provides young men and women in the region to continue playing the sport that they love while getting their education close to home,” said Director of Athletics Larry Cox.
Urbana will begin searching for a head volleyball coach in the near future.
