USA Volleyball will hold an open tryout for the U.S. Women’s National Team from March 3rd-5th in Colorado Springs. At the tryout, the USA Volleyball National Team coach will be evaluating players both for the U.S. Senior National Team, as well as other teams like the U.S. Collegiate National Team (that will play at the World University Games) and the Junior National Teams.
At the tryouts, certain players will be specifically invited by the National Team staff before open registration begins. The tryout is expected to draw in more than 240 athletes hoping to earn a spot on one of the U.S. Women’s National Team programs. Players to come out of the program in the past include Kim Hill, the 2014 FIVB World Championship MVP.
The tryout is open to current college-age athletes and older born in the years 1989-1999 – Women’s Junior age group athletes born in 1998 and 1999 AND NOT currently enrolled in college must be invited to attend this tryout – and high school athletes born in 1997 or earlier. Any athlete born before 1988 must contact USA Volleyball for approval.
The camp will be led by the U.S. Women’s National Team staff, including head coach Karch Kiraly and his assistants Jamie Morrison and Tom Black.
Between 20-25 other club and college coaches are also invited to come to the camp to support the effort across a large number of athletes. A spokesperson for USA Volleyball says that a list of those coaches invited will be posted once the camp begins.
At least one coach invited to participate is Missouri State assistant coach Jake Barreau – one of 8 coaches invited as “coders,” or stat takers in layman’s terms.
Besides being a good networking opportunity and an experience working with some of the best coaches in the country, coders play a crucial roll. The participating players will play 2 days of 6 vs. 6 in waves, after which they will be put into teams on the final day and play a tournament within tiers.
The nature of the camp, with wave after wave of 6 vs. 6, will require a herculean marathon effort to track stats to give the National Team staff an opportunity to best evaluate and group the players.
I would like to be invited to tryout .
