Volleymob/Jeremy Brahm’s ranking system uses match results on a daily basis from FIVB events (World League, Volleyball Nations League, World Championships (and its qualifying tournaments), Grand Champions Cup and World Cup), the Olympics (and its qualifying tournaments) and Continental Championships (and its qualifying tournaments) for the last four years. A point is awarded for each set won (maximum of 3 points), and additional points are awarded for the points ratio up to 1 point (winning by 25 points or more (1 set)). If teams play opponents outside of their confederation, there is multiplier to the original score (the two confederations divided in half) and then the rank of the team is multiplied as well. In general, winning an international match will give a team 9-14 points, while winning a continental match will give a team 3-8 points. Friendly matches are not included in the team point totals.
Points are weighted to most current results with the following calculations:
- Current year, 100%
- 1 year, 75%
- 2 years, 50%
- 3 years, 25%
Confederation Multipliers for 2018 are as follows:
- Europe (CEV), 1.7500 (strongest confederation)
- South America (CSV), 1.6831
- North & Central America & Caribbean (NORCECA), 1.6260
- Asia (AVC), 1.4765
- Africa (CAVB), 1.2566
Using these methods, when looking at the results from 2003 to last weekend’s World Championship Final, the higher ranked team has won 74.10% of the time. With this said, where are the teams ranked after to the World Championships?

The French Men’s national team is still ranked as the best in the world. Remember this is over a four year period and they won the FIVB World League twice (2015, 2017) and reached the final of the VNL this year. Those required the French to win matches, which they did in volume, which increases their score. In second is Brazil, which benefits from finishing second in the World Championships. The USA is just behind Brazil in third. I think that if the USA had beaten Poland on Saturday, the USA may have been ranked second before the final. Russia is a distant fourth, while 2018 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Champions Poland come in fifth. Poland scored the most points in my ranking system of any team in the World Championships with 112.052 in 12 matches, which included two losses.
The highest moving team in the tournament was Cameroon, up 9 spots to 45th. With their win over Tunisia and taking a set against Australia, the gained 9.007 points. At lower ranking spots, not as many matches are played so a team can move up quickly with wins within their confederation tournaments. The next highest mover was Finland, which moved up 4 spots to 19th. The biggest drops came from Australia and China, both falling three spots from where their tournaments began.
