In the midst of their busy international playing schedule, April Ross, Geena Urango and Lauren Fendrick took their free time to play some beach volleyball with professional basketball players – Karl-Anthony Towns & D’Angelo Russell.
The two NBA stars had little to no volleyball experience and throwing the game out on the sand was another obstacle that the two had to overcome.
Out in the heat of the California sun, Towns/Russell took on Urango/Fendrick as Ross was out at the time with a dislocated toe. The game was fairly one sided, as Towns and Russell struggled to find their groove in the sand. Towards the end of the match, they started to find their groove but were mainly illegal volleyball moves, though, Urango and Fendrick were impressed with the lateral movements in the sand and the sheer length of their arms helped them to nab some balls that other wouldn’t be able to.
Ross/Fendrick recently competed at the Beach World Championships in Vienna, Austria, placing second behind 2016 Olympic gold medalists Kira Walkenhorst and Laura Ludwig. They are awaiting a potential wild card draw to the FIVB World Tour Finals that will take place later this month in Hamburg, Germany.
