The FIVB World Beach Tour event in Rio was not always the sunniest and dry conditions, which is often preferred by most players, but was dreary and rainy after durations of the competition.
These unfavorable conditions did not stop the players from playing the game but increased different strategies used to play. C.J. from Italy explained that he likes to push the ball deep, especially on the serve because if the receiver is late or missteps the ball can easily slide off the arm of the competitor. With this strategy, also comes the more difficult return to a desirable place of play – if the player does return the ball deep, they have to make it through the wet sand to complete the play.
Marco Grimalt of Chile said, “There are two things that happen when we play in the rain. First, the cold temperature, which determines the clothing you will wear and then the rain itself, which makes the ball and sand wet. This makes the ball harder and the sand becomes hard making the match itself more difficult.”
