Nebraska’s Mikaela Foecke and Penn State’s Haleigh Washington pick up the Big Ten Co-Players of the Week. Also earning awards this week are Penn State’s Kendall White, Minnesota’s Samantha Seliger-Swenson and Wisconsin’s Dana Rettke.
Rettke’s seventh Freshman of the Week honor breaks a Big Ten record, previously set by now-junior Seliger-Swenson for the most Freshman of the Week awards that was previously six.
Co-Players of the Week
Mikaela Foecke – Nebraska – junior
Foecke averaged 3.9 kills, 2.0 digs and 1.1 blocks per set on a .387 hitting percentage, helping Nebraska to an undefeated weekend. This is Foecke’s first career Player of the Week accolade.
Against Michigan State, Foecke registered 14 kills, five digs, three blocks and an ace on a .394 hitting clip. At Michigan, Foecke added another 13 kills and nine digs.
Haleigh Washington – Penn State – senior
Washington was named the Co-Player of the Week, making it her ninth in her career and fourth this season. Washington posted an average of 3.4 kills and 2.1 blocks per set on a .548 hitting clip.
Against Wisconsin, Washington registered her 500th career blocks, making her the ninth player in Nittany Lion history to accomplish the feat. In the match, she blocked eight balls and had a team-best 14 kills while posting 10 kills on a .769 hitting percentage in the team’s win over Illinois.
Defensive Player of the Week
Kendall White – Penn State – sophomore
White earned her second career Defensive Player of the Week honor, as Penn State extended their winning streak to 11 matches. Against Wisconsin, White picked up a match-best 21 digs while scooping up another 23 and was error-free in 12 receptions in the team’s win over Illinois.
Setter of the Week
Samantha Seliger-Swenson – Minnesota – junior
Seliger-Swenson picks up her 11th career Setter of the Week accolade and her fifth this season after she helped the Gophers to wins over Illinois and Rutgers. Over the two matches, Seliger-Swenson dished out 90 assists for an average of 11.3 assists per set.
Against Illinois, Seliger-Swenson handed out 58 assists and 14 digs for a double-double while adding another 32 assists, four blocks and three digs at Rutgers.
Freshman of the Week
Dana Rettke – Wisconsin – freshman
Rettke picks up seven Freshman of the Week honors this season, breaking the all-time Big Ten record that was previously set by Seliger-Swenson. There are still four weeks left in the season, giving Rettke the opportunity to extend on her record. On the week, Rettke posted an average of 4.0 kills and 1.3 blocks per set on a .407 hitting clip.
The Badgers posted a 1-1 record on the weekend with Rettke recording 17 kills, four blocks, two digs and an ace in Wisconsin’s efforts against Penn State. In the team’s win over Northwestern, Rettke added another 11 kills and five blocks on a .471 hitting percentage.
