The Lady Toppers will open their Conference USA title defense from Boca Raton, Fla., at Florida Atlantic. With an 8-3 record to date, Florida Atlantic owns a 2-1 record at the FAU Arena and tallied a five-match win streak prior to a loss in its most recent match. The Owls return three starters from last year’s 15-14 squad, and 10 letterwinners. In the most recent meeting between the sides, WKU defeated the Owls 3-1 in Bowling Green during the regular season. WKU owns a 21-0 advantage in all-time meetings with the weekend hosts.
Following Friday’s match, the Red and White will head up to Charlotte to take on the 49ers at Halton Arena. While WKU owns a 10-3 lead all-time over the hosts, the sides have met just once prior in Charlotte – a 3-0 sweep by the Lady Toppers. The 49ers return five starters and letterwinners from last season’s unit that went 7-23. Charlotte is off to a hot 13-3 start in 2017 including a current 10-match win streak entering its Friday match with Marshall.
WKU and Charlotte have faced one common opponent in Belmont this season. The Lady Toppers swept the Bruins on their home court in Nashville while Charlotte dropped a five-setter to Belmont inside Halton Arena.
Owning a current 25-match win streak over Conference USA opposition including regular season and postseason contests, the target on WKU’s back continues to grow. Since joining C-USA prior to the 2014 campaign, the Lady Toppers have claimed all three regular season and conference tournament titles. The 2014 regular season crown was the only championship the WKU squad didn’t win outright, sharing the honors with UTSA.
On a roll after a 13-2 non-conference showing, WKU will look to build on its early season successes. The Lady Toppers have collected victories in 16-of-17 of the most recent sets they’ve played, dropping the lone frame to Dayton over the weekend. WKU’s nine-match win streak includes victories over five teams that appeared in the 2016 NCAA Tournament. Arguably the biggest win came in the Red and White’s sweep of No. 25 Ohio State on its home court. The win was WKU’s first program sweep of a top-25 opponent and seventh win all-time over a ranked team.
As WKU Volleyball wraps up its six-match stretch on the road, the Lady Toppers will return home to host Louisiana Tech and Middle Tennessee next weekend in another Friday – Sunday Conference USA series.
