NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Facing its highest ranked opponent of the season, the Rutgers women’s volleyball team was defeated by the reigning National Champions and top-ranked Nebraska on Saturday night at the College Ave Gym. The Cornhuskers (22-1, 13-1 Big Ten) swept the Scarlet Knights (4-23, 0-14 Big Ten) by set scores of 25-10, 25-14, and 25-12.

Nebraska marked the highest ranked opponent to cross paths with Rutgers this season. RU has played in 10 matches against a ranked opponent, including four matches against a team in the top five.

Senior right side Lauren Cloyd led RU with five kills and three blocks. Fifth-year senior middle blocker Mikaela Matthews also added three blocks, along with three kills in the match.

Nebraska was led by Briana Holman with 12 kills, posting a .688 hitting percentage as well. Kadie Rolfzen followed with 10 kills in addition to four blocks. Amber Rolfzen added in a match-best five blocks.

After dropping the first set, the Scarlet Knights kept the score within three in the early serves of the second set, as a block for Cloyd and Matthews held the score at 6-3. However, Nebraska went on to generate a substantial lead on the board en route to its second set win of the match.

Returning from the break, Rutgers offense found a rhythm the start of the third set as a kill for Cloyd knotted the score, 3-3. The Scarlet Knights held the margin as close as two as a kill for Matthews held the Huskers’ lead at 7-5. From there, Nebraska found a 5-0 run to distance its advantage. Trimble stumped the run with a kill. However, it was not enough to keep the RU gears rolling as the UN lead was too much to overcome.
