It wasn’t an easy road, but 12th-ranked Baylor battled its way to a UTSA Invitational Tournament team championship with a pair of wins in San Antonio, Texas. The Lady Bears outlasted the Roadrunners in 5 sets on Friday and Virginia Tech in straight sets on Saturday.

UTSA split on the weekend with a win over Virginia Tech in 4 sets, while the Hokies went 0-2.

Baylor finishes the nonconference portion of its season with an 8-3 record. The Lady Bears, who are riding a 3-match win streak, begin the Big 12 season on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at Texas Tech. BU was chosen to finish second in VolleyMob’s preseason preview of the Big 12.

All-Tournament Team

Tournament Notables

  • Baylor’s Yossiana Pressley was named MVP and to the all-tournament team, along with Aniah Philo and Shelly Fanning.
  • Pressley registered 37 kills in the Lady Bears’ two-match stretch and hit a season-high .354 against the Hokies.
  • Philo notched back-to-back double-doubles with 20 kills and 17 digs against UTSA and 12 kills and 10 digs against Virginia Tech.
  • Fanning contributed 15 kills against the Roadrunners and 11 kills against the Hokies.
  • UTSA’s Hannah Lopez and Amanda Gonzales were selected to the all-tournament team after helping the Roadrunners to a 1-1 record.
  • Lopez registered back-to-back double-doubles, notching a career-high 21 kills and a career-high 13 digs against Baylor and adding 18 kills and 13 digs against Virginia Tech. She also set a career-high with 4 blocks against the nationally-ranked Lady Bears.
  • Gonzales posted 24 assists and 9 digs against Baylor and contributed 34 assists and 6 digs against Virginia Tech.
  • Virginia Tech’s Jaila Tolbert earned all-tournament team recognition. The senior right side hitter registered a .362 attack percentage and 28 kills in the Hokies’ 0-2 weekend.
  • Tolbert has been selected to three all-tournament teams this year, earning honors at Charlotte, Bobcat and UTSA invitationals.
