Match Stats

The Stanford women are continuing to fall apart after 4th loss in their last 6 games when they lost to the #15 UCLA Bruins on the road on Friday evening. Stanford had defeated UCLA in the teams’ previous 7 matchups.

UCLA hit .260 on the match to Stanford’s .240, which is only the 4th time this season they’ve been outhit – a testament to their impressive defense than anything. The Cardinal are 0-4 in those matches.

Stanford still out-blocked the Bruins 11-3 but a combined 34 kills from the Bruins’ star outside hitters Jordan Anderson (15/306, .306) and Torrey van Winden (19/36, .417) revitalized the home team late in the game.

Van Winden’s kills by set:

  • Set 1 – 3 kills
  • Set 2 – 4 kills
  • Set 3 – 5 kills
  • Set 4 – 7 kills

UCLA never led in set 1, going down 8-2 early, but a 9-0 run in the middle of set 2 turned the tide and the Bruins would win the next 3 sets to take the victory.

The Bruins not move into a three-way tie for 3rd-place in the Pac-12, while Stanford falls into a three-way tie for 6th. Last year, the Pac-12 sent 7 teams to the NCAA tournament. That means that the Cardinal are suddenly on the qualifying bubble, though a tough out-of-conference schedule that included wins over top-25 teams Minnesota, Illinois, and Penn State.

The Bruins scored the first two points of set two, dropped the next four and then netted nine in a row to go in front 11-4. Buechler had three kills during the 9-0 run, while Frager and Muno each had a kill and teamed up for a block. Stanford got as close as three at 13-10 and 14-11, but the Bruins began to pull away with a 7-1 run to go ahead by a set-best nine at 21-12. Van Winden had four kills, Anderson and Buechler each added three and Formico tallied five digs, as the Bruins out-hit the Cardinal .281 to .152.

Despite three ties, the Bruins never trailed in set three. UCLA raced out to a 9-3 lead on three Anderson kills, a Buechler kill and ace, kills by Felix and Van Winden and two Cardinal errors. Stanford came back to even things up at 12- and 13-all, but the Bruins scored four in a row on back-to-back Anderson kills and consecutive hitting errors for Stanford to go ahead 17-13. The Cardinal were unable to get back to even, closing to within one at 21-20. However, the Bruins got four of the last five of the third behind kills by Frager and Muno and back-to-back spikes from Anderson to wrap up a 25-21 win. Anderson had nine kills in an error-free 15 swings, while Van Winden posted five kills. Formico added six digs. The Bruins out-hit the Cardinal .293 to .243.

Set four featured 15 ties and three lead changes, with the biggest lead for each team being three. With the Cardinal ahead 17-16, three in a row for the Bruins on a kill by Frager, a solo block from Anderson and a Buechler ace gave the home team their first lead since 5-4. Despite two more ties at 19- and 20-all, the Cardinal could not grab the lead back. A kill by Anderson and back-to-back from Van Winden put the Bruins ahead 23-20. The teams sided out from there, as a Stanford attack error finished up a 25-22 win. Van Winden paced the Bruins with seven kills, Frager added four and Anderson posted three, as the Bruins out-hit the Cardinal .293 to .263.

The Bruins take their three-match winning streak to the John Wooden Center on Sunday when they host California at 12 p.m. Live audio and video will be available at UCLABruins.com.
