The country of Mexico is celebrating its 100th year of volleyball, and in addition to a number of festivities and events, have released a book. The work, titled “100 Years of Volleyball in Mexico,” was unveiled in a ceremony last week and contains stories from former players and photographs of the national team throughout the decades.
In its 100 years, Mexico’s men’s National Team has twice played in the Olympic Games – a 10th place finish at the 1968 event they hosted, and an 11th place finish last year in Rio. The women’s team has never qualified for the Olympics, but did win the gold medal at the 1955 Pan American Games, the first time that volleyball was sponsored in that event, ahead of the United States.
2017 marks a pivotal year for Mexican volleyball. As the men’s team hopes to build from its Olympic appearance, the country will host the women’s FIVB U20 World Championships in Veracruz, the U19 Pan American Cup, the NORCECA Beach Volleyball Tour, and a site of the 2017 FIVB World Grand Prix.
The book was unveiled by federation president Jesus Perales Navarro on January 31 and is expected to be published in March.
