#3 Minnesota Rolls to Sweep of Idaho State for 11-0 Start

Boise, Idaho – #3 Minnesota kept their 2017 season rolling as they swept Idaho State on a neutral court in Boise, Idaho behind a dominant overall performance.

The Golden Gophers won each set by double-digits, logging hitting percentages of .389, .344 and .438 respectively while holding Idaho State to .056, .156 and .057 in the three sets of action. Overall, Minnesota hit .390 for the match and held Idaho State to .087.

Stephanie Samedy led the offense with 14 kills while hitting .400 for Minnesota and was joined by Chloe Hirst (11 kills) of Idaho State as the only players with double-digit kills. A pair of Gophers came close to the mark though, as Regan Pittman and Alexis Hart each had nine while hitting .750 and .500 respectively. All-American setter Samantha Seliger-Swenson notched a double-double with 38 assists and 12 digs as well.

Behind holding Idaho State to .087 was Minnesota’s 47 digs and myriad of blocks, as libero Dalianliz Rosado anchored the back of the defense with 16 digs.

For Minnesota, they now prepare for the treacherous Big Ten as they open with Michigan and Michigan State before a road trip to Nebraska. Idaho State still has one more match in the Boise State Tournament to go as they face the host in Boise State before starting up Big Sky play.

The No. 1 University of Minnesota volleyball program finished off the Boise State Tournament with a 3-0 sweep over Idaho State, this morning, in Boise, Idaho. With the win, the Gophers go 11-0 in non-conference action and won its third straight-tournament.

Stephanie Samedy posted 14 kills and hit .400, followed by Alexis Hart with nine kills (hit .500) and Regan Pittman, nine kills (.750). Samantha Seliger-Swenson had a double-double with 38 assists and 12 digs. Dalianliz Rosado added a team-best 16 digs. Minnesota had 13 student-athletes see action in the match. As a team, the Gophers hit .390, including a set-best .438 in the third. They also added seven blocks, 47 digs and 47 kills.

First Set: Minnesota opened the match with a 4-1 run, en route to a 25-15 set win. After a Lohman kill, the Gophers went up, 11-8 as Idaho State called a timeout. With the Bengals cutting the Gopher lead to two at 15-13, Minnesota responded with a four-point run to push its lead to 19-13. Idaho State used its second timeout of the set to break the run. Minnesota, however, added on the pressure, led by Pittman. She had back-to-back kills, followed by back-to-back blocks to give the Gophers a 23-14 and eventually the 1-0 lead.

Second Set: The Gophers took the first point of the set and led the entire match for a 25-14 set win. Minnesota went up, 8-4 off a block from Samedy/Lohman and later 13-6 on a Seliger-Swenson kill as Idaho State called a timeout. Hart pushed the lead to 16-7 off a kill, and again at 18-9 off another kill. Taylor Morganproduced a kill for a 21-12, while Brittany McLean added a kill for set point. The Gophers closed the door on the set with a Pittman kill to go up, 2-0.

Third Set: Like the second set, the Gophers opened the set with the first point and maintained the lead throughout the set and a 25-11 win. A McLean kill put the Gophers up, 9-4, while Hart added back-to-back kills at 12-5. McLean later added another kill for a 17-9 lead, while a Sophie Beckley ace added a 10 digit lead at 20-10. Kayla Buford added the finishing touches to the match when she had back-to-back kills for the match win.
