STANFORD, Calif. — After shaking up the starting rotation, California Baptist University gave No. 8-ranked Stanford University all it could handle, but dropped a three-set match Friday night (25-19, 25-21, 25-18).
The Lancers drop to 2-7 overall and 1-5 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The Cardinal improves to 6-2 on the year and remains undefeated in conference with a 3-0 mark.
Due to some injuries, Emmett Enriques found himself out of his usual libero position and into the attack as an outside hitter. He finished the match with five kills, one block, one ace and four digs. Rohit Paul took over the defensive role and logged eight digs on the night. Jackson Burge and Enrique de Diego Garcia led the Lancers with seven kills apiece.
In the first set, CBU saw itself trailing by three, 12-9, but battled back to a 12-12 tie. A Cardinal service error started the run, before Cody Jackson had back-to-back blocks – including one with Kevin Vaz – to even the game.
Stanford cut the run and built back its lead, 19-13, and coasted on the momentum built to a 25-19 victory.
CBU looked to turn things around in the second set and turned a two-point deficit into its first lead of the night with three-straight points. Garcia got the scoring action going with a kill off a Jackson set, before the Lancers stuffed two consecutive attempts from the Cardinal off the net – one from Jackson and Vaz, the other from Burge and Vaz.
Stanford managed to take back the lead, 19-14, but Enriques helped CBU climb back in it. The libero-turned-pin teamed up with Vaz for a block and laid down a kill to bookend a 3-0 run, which had an ace from Vaz in the middle.
The Cardinal kept pushing and grabbed set point, but Enriques found another hole in Stanford’s defense to keep the Lancers alive. It didn’t last long, however, as Stanford took the set 25-21.
CBU found itself trailing 7-2 early on in set three, but once again dug deep to pull within two, 7-5, off two Cardinal errors and a kill from Vaz. It was the closest the Lancers would get though as Stanford sealed the win at 25-18.
The Lancers return home for a five-match homestand, beginning Wednesday with a match against UC Irvine at 7 p.m.
