#8 Wisconsin Hits .449 In Sweep Over Syracuse

Wisconsin came out swinging in their three-set sweep over Syracuse to start off their K-State Invitational slate. The Badgers ended the match with a .449 hitting percentage while holding Syracuse to .033.

In total, Wisconsin put down 46 kills to Syracuse’s 15, 41 assists to 14 and 29 digs to 16. The only stat that Syracuse outmatched Wisconsin on was blocking with 5.5 to 4.

The Badgers started the match with a 5-0 run, then another 6-1 run to make the score 11-1. The runs kept piling up with Syracuse’s first sequential points coming at 22-6 and 22-7 before the Badgers closed the first up at 25-9. The second set was a close battle to begin as Syracuse found some ground on the court with the score at 8-6, but Wisconsin went on a 12-2 run to make a huge score gap of 20-8. Syracuse fought back late, holding off four set points before falling 15-14. The final set was even closer a match, with the first half of the set a trade off of points. Wisconsin used a number of small runs throughout the mid to later half of the set to complete the sweep 25-16.

In total, 14 career-bests were accomplished by Wisconsin players including Duello’s six kills on eight swings and no errors for a .750 hitting percentage.

Leading the Badgers was Kelli Bates with 12 kills on a .429 hitting percentage and six digs while Dana Rettke put down another 10 points on a .533 hitting clip, two aces and two blocks in the win. Setter Sydney Hilley dished out 34 assists and put down four aces, five digs and two blocks.

For Syracuse, Santita Ebangwese was the top scorer with four kills on eight swings with no errors for a .500 hitting percentage while also adding two blocks. Leading the field in blocks was Amber Witherspoon with three.

Behind 10 service aces, the sixth-ranked Wisconsin volleyball team swept Syracuse 25-9, 25-14, 25-16 in the first round of the K-State Invitational on Friday morning.

–          The Badgers improve to 3-0 on the season and have not lost a set this year.

–          Wisconsin’s 10 service aces ranks third on the UW single-match record list under 25-point rally scoring.

–          Freshman Sydney Hilley had a match and career-high four service aces. Freshman Dana Rettke (2 aces), sophomore Sarah Dodd (2) and freshman Grace Loberg (1) all set personal bests from the service line.

–          Senior Kelli Bates led all hitters with 12 kills while Rettke added 10 kills.

–          Wisconsin hit a season-high .449 (46 kills – 11 errors – 78 attempts) while holding Syracuse to an opponent season-low .033 (15-13-61).

–          The Badgers face Arkansas (4-0) in the second round of the invitational today at 5:30 p.m.
